Guidelines for Handling Common Dental Emergencies

The following are general guidelines and not a substitute for advice and care from a dental or medical professional. If you experience a dental emergency, please seek immediate care.

A severe, persistent toothache This can be a sign of an infection or abscess. If your toothache persists even after using over-the-counter pain relievers, emergency care can prevent complications and alleviate your discomfort. Seek immediate care
A knocked-out tooth We do not recommend replanting a knocked-out baby tooth. If, however, you knock out a permanent tooth, carefully pick it up by its crown and rinse it without disturbing the root or removing any attached tissues. Gently return the tooth to its socket, and if that’s not possible, place it in a container of saliva or milk and take it to your emergency appointment. This is a time-sensitive emergency. The sooner you seek care, the better the outcomes.
A loose or dislodged tooth Rinse gently with lukewarm water and apply light pressure to the affected tooth to keep it in place. Our team will do everything possible to stabilize and preserve the tooth. Seek immediate care
A fractured or broken tooth A cracked or fractured tooth can be painful and can also lead to infection without prompt treatment. Rinse with lukewarm water and use cold compresses to relieve any swelling or discomfort. Locate any fragments of the tooth and place them in a container of saliva or milk. Seek immediate care
An infected tooth or an abscess An infected tooth can cause severe pain and can lead to serious health problems if not treated. If you have persistent pain, a pimple-like bump on your gums, oozing pus, swelling, or fever, it’s important to get immediate care. If you have severe facial swelling, head to your nearest hospital emergency room. Seek immediate care
A broken or lost dental crown or filling If you locate your restoration, use dental cement or sugar-free gum to keep it in place. A missing crown or filling can leave the affected tooth exposed to bacteria, which can lead to cavities and infection. Schedule the next available appointment
Injury to the tongue, lips, cheeks, or gums Apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to stop bleeding of the tongue, lips, cheeks, or gums. If you have heavy, uncontrolled bleeding, head to the nearest emergency room. If the bleeding continues, seek immediate care
A minor tooth chip Collect any fragments of the tooth and place them in some saliva or milk to keep them moist. Schedule the next available appointment
